Glasgow Film Festival deadline for submissions

The deadline is fast approaching for submissions to the Glasgow Film Festival, all entries must be submitted by Friday 31st October 08.

The 5th Glasgow Film Festival will run from 12-22 February 2009 in venues throughout the city. The festival is the fastest-growing film event in Britain, attracting audiences of over 20,000 in 2008 when it played host to a bumper array of UK premieres including Lars And The Real Girl, Cassandra’s Dream, The Cottage, The Bank Job, Honeydripper and The Spiderwick Chronicles.

The festival has now started the submission process for 2009 and welcomes features, shorts and work in all genres. The festival is committed to supporting Scottish talent and providing audiences with the opportunity to see the best of world cinema. NETS call for applications

Scottish Screen are seeking applicants for their New Entrants Programme for Film and Television

A tiered programme of on-the-job experience and tailored short courses and mentoring. The NETS Programme develops skilled and creative practitioners for film and television in production, craft, design and technical areas of the industry. NETS trainees work with independent companies and broadcasters across feature film, TV drama, factual production, commercials and interactive.

NETS One: full-time for one year, seeking up to 8 people with entry level specialist skills and interest to progress their career in one of the following: Production Co-ordination for factual, drama or animation, Camera, or Art department.

NETS Advance: seeking 3 people to further develop existing professional skills for a 12-week full-time, fast track programme in Production, Art department or Camera.

You should be based in Scotland or willing to relocate; training allowance, expenses, and contribution for dependent and relocation costs provided.

Summer screening at Rome International Film Festival

Glasgow Film Office supported film ‘Summer‘ has been selected to screen at Rome International Film Festival (22-31 October 2008) in the Alice in the City (Alice nella città) category, the festival’s youth section. Glasgow based director Kenny Glenaan, writer Hugh Ellis, actress Joanna Tulej and Joe Doherty will all be attending the festival with the film.

The film tells the story about Shaun and Daz, two vibrant kids, wasted by their experience of education. All they have is their friendship and for Shaun, his first love Katy. From the moment Shaun steps into the world he is bound to lose. Labelled as a violent bully he destroys himself and takes Daz with him. Shaun has twelve years to reflect on an intense summer of love, sex and loyalty. But Daz’s imminent death forces Shaun to go on a journey to confront his past. This is the story of a man full of intelligence and promise struggling to reclaim his life.

Celtic Media Festival deadline for entries

Deadline for entries is 5pm on Friday 24th October.

The Celtic Media Festival has restructured the categories this year including factual single, factual entertainment and factual series. The festival is introducing an entirely new category this year too - titles, stings idents and promos.

BAFTA Scotland Award Nominations Announced

BAFTA Scotland today announced their nominations for the BAFTA Scotland Awards. All three Feature Film nominees received financial support from Glasgow Film Office.

Outpost, Summer and Stone of Destiny will all be vying for the coveted Best Film Award at this year’s ceremony at the City Halls in Glasgow’s Merchant City on Sunday 9 November 2008. Goodluck to all!

GFO supported films at The Times, BFI London Film Festival

Better Things and New Town Killers both backed by GFO will be screening at The Times, BFI London Film Festival.

Set in a small, rural community in the Cotswolds, Better Things tells the story of a group of young people as they struggle to come to terms with the difficulties of growing up in a world of limited opportunities, whilst their parents and grandparents try to hold their families and their own relationships together.
Although the film shot in the Cotswolds, local producer David Smith was involved as an associate producer and they completed their sound post production here in Glasgow at Savalas.
The film will be screening tonight and on the 22nd October as part of the festival.

And the new feature from writer and director Richard Jobson, New Town Killers, will premiere at the fest on Tuesday 28th October.

The film follows two private bankers, Alistair and Jamie, who get their kicks from playing a 12-hour game of hunt, hide and seek with people from the margins of society. Their next target is Sean Kelly, a parentless teenager who lives with his sister in a housing estate on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Stone of Destiny in cinemas

Stone of Destiny will be released in cinemas all over the UK tomorrow, Friday 10 October 2008.

The Glasgow Film Office supported feature film Stone of Destiny, starring Charlie Cox, Kate Mara, Billy Boyd and Robert Carlyle, retells the fascinating and true story of four young Glaswegian students, led by the then 25-year-old Ian Hamilton, who in 1951 outwitted the British authorities in their successful attempt to take back the Stone of Scoune back to its Scottish home.

A red carpet screenng of the film will take place at 1pm on Friday 10 October 2008 at the 241-capacity independent cinema Highland Theatre in Oban, the home town of the story’s main protagonist, Ian Hamilton. Both Ian Hamilton and director Charles Martin Smith will be present at the screening.

Berlinale Talent Campus Deadline

Hurry is you want to apply - the deadline for applications for The Berlinale Talent Campus is Wednesday 8th October.

Berlinale Talent Campus is part of the 59th Berlin International Film Festival and is an amazing opportunity for professional networking. It includes a combination of practical learning as well as masterclasses with some of the biggest names in the business. Previous speakers have included Ridley Scott, Frances McDormand, Walter Salles and Dennis Hopper.

Assistant Production Accountant Training Scheme.

Applications are now open to new entrants seeking to become freelance Assistant Production Accountants.

Funded by the Skillset Film Skills Fund and the UK feature film industry, selected trainees will over a ten month period, undertake a programme of short courses and attachments to features and television drama. Successful candidates will receive a tax-free training allowance of £300 per week.

Application parks are available from the Production Guild website, and the closing date is Friday 24th October 2008.

RDP open for applications

TRC’s Researcher Development Programme (RDP) is now open for applications from indies in the nations and regions.

This unique training initiative, delivered by TRC media in partnership with Channel 4, enables independent production companies to employ a development researcher for a period of 12 months.

The RDP polishes researchers’ skills and ideas to network standard and offers top-flight training together with unprecedented access to UK network and digital commissioning editors.
